Crumble Coding Club

Friends of Downview

Description I would like to use the grant money to set up a coding club for Pupil Premium pupils at my school, which are pupils from a low income or disadvantaged background. I would target the pupils in year 3-6 so aged 8-11. I would run the club over a minimum of 6 sessions, each lasting approximately 50 minutes. I will be teaching the concepts and skills to the children myself. I would start at the beginner level as this will be new to the children and then build up the skill level according to the children's progress.
I am looking to introduce them to programming through the use of Crumble kits. These kits will produce an output based on the code the children program using the Crumble software. I would use laptops and Chromebooks for the children to explore the Crumble software and learn how to create algorithms to control the output. They will be able to use the physical Crumble kits to attach to the computers to transfer the code and then produce the desired outcome. The aim of these sessions will be to increase the children's knowledge and understanding of how programming works and to understand that by writing an algorithm, which they input into a computer program, they can then produce a physical output. Initially they children would learn to produce simple outcomes like an LED lighting up, a buzzer sounding and a motor rotating. Depending on their progress, I would then aim to move them towards creating a more visible output through making a homemade vehicle move using the motor and wheels with an on/off switch programmed so that they can control when it starts and stops.
