Description
What content does the event teach?
- Coding, specifically the skills of sequencing and repetition
- Computational Thinking (perseverance, debugging, logic, collaboration)
Which methods and resources are used to convey this content to the participants?
Pupils will use the physical equipment in pairs to explore the coding principles
They will experiment using the different colour tiles which, when placed on the track, command the train.
This will be completely hands-on learning
What are the goals of the event?
- Increase engagement in programming
- Develop coding skills and therefore attainment
- Increase enthusiasm and experiences of vulnerable children
Which target group are you addressing with your event?
This all-day event will be accessible to all 100 pupils in Years 3/4
Specifically to help raise aspirations for the 22 pupils with special educational needs and the 31 pupils identified as disadvantaged.
We also hope to raise engagement for girls through this real-world applicable workshop.
What makes your event special for the target group?
There is huge research to support the use of physical manipulatives to support learning. This is a prime example of how this pedagogy can be applied into learning about coding.
Having this specialist workshop allows the pupils to access equipment they would not normally have access to.
The amount of equipment be used also allows pupils to have high engagement without having to wait for a turn.
Is there any other relevant information for the target group, e.g. about registration?
Within this group, a further 22 children have English as an additional language.
