Shackleton ESU - STEM Project

Description The Shackleton ESU STEM project, delivered in partnership with TechyTots, offers a series of curriculum-enriching coding and computational thinking sessions aimed at broadening participation in STEM. The project specifically engages unit members from diverse backgrounds, including those from across the full Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) scale, ensuring inclusivity and targeted support for underrepresented youth in the field.

Overview

The programme delivers structured, hands-on classes that develop coding skills in an accessible and engaging format. Activities are designed to introduce and reinforce core STEM concepts while supporting youth development in a collaborative, creative environment.

Lesson Plans

* **Algorithms and Programming:** Understanding and writing precise instructions.
* **Sequencing Algorithms:** Learning the logical flow of code.
* **Debugging Sequences:** Identifying and correcting errors.
* **Repetition:** Using loops and iteration for efficiency.
* **Selection:** Implementing ‘if’ statements and decision-making logic.
* **Creating Digital Content:** Exploring computing through art and pattern-based design using code structures.

TechyTots Will Provide:

* All necessary resources for each session.
* Qualified and experienced staff to lead and support delivery.

Safeguarding:

* All staff hold up-to-date, online-registered DBS checks.
* Staff are trained in safeguarding practices, including “Keeping Children Safe in Education.”
* TechyTots adheres to safer recruitment policies.

Health and Safety:

* Full risk assessments are completed for each session venue.
* All equipment is offline, ensuring no internet safety risks.
* Evidence of comprehensive public liability insurance is in place.

Evaluation:

* Baseline and end-of-session assessments through observation and questioning.
* Participant feedback on enjoyment and future interests.
* Photographic documentation of engagement and participation.

This project not only aims to foster technical skills but also promotes equity of opportunity by engaging young people from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, actively supporting those who are often underrepresented in STEM.
