Primary Computing Day

Bishop Challoner Catholic College

Description Our "Primary Computing Day" is a full-day event hosted at Bishop Challoner Catholic College, aimed at inspiring Year 5 pupils from local primary schools through engaging, hands-on digital and computing experiences. The event introduces participants to key areas of computing such as drone programming, robotics, physical computing, cyber security, and virtual reality. These topics are delivered through practical workshops led by trained Year 8 and 9 Computing Champions, using accessible tools like micro:bits, Tello drones, VR headsets, and unplugged coding activities.

The goals of the event are to:

- Inspire digital curiosity and creativity in young learners, especially those who may not have access to such experiences in their primary schools.
- Encourage early interest in computing and STEM careers.
- Provide a leadership and enrichment opportunity for our secondary students.
- Strengthen partnerships between our secondary school and feeder primaries.

The target group is Year 5 pupils aged 9–10, particularly from schools in underrepresented or disadvantaged communities within Birmingham. What makes this event unique is that it is peer-led; older students guide and mentor the younger participants, creating a supportive and aspirational learning environment. The workshops are designed to be inclusive, engaging, and tailored to a wide range of abilities and experiences.

Registration is coordinated through primary schools, with each school invited to bring a team of six pupils (three girls and three boys) along with a supervising staff member. The event is completely free for schools to attend.
