After School Coding Club

St Johns J and I School

Description Event 1
I would like to start a coding club as an after school club. I am going to be inviting our EAL children who are new to English, refugees as well as our SEND children to build confidence in school. I want to make these children successful at coding so they can become role models for children in school. Children have had very little experience (purple mash coding) of coding and I want to widen there knowledge. I want to use equipment that they have never used before code critters, Edissons and possibly if funding allows turtle stitch. I would be using make code to code microbits and link with the Edissons. Children will not be given these experiences at home and believe this will help give them core memories to take in to adulthood and even inspire future careers. I believe this event each week will improve mental health as they will be successful and be able to share their knowledge to their classes in school. If event is successful we can give job roles in school as a Coding Expert.

Event 2
If funding allows I would then buy the Brother sewing machine and then start a turtle sewing club for our girls - focusing on our looked after girls/SEND children and pairing them with gifted and talented children as these are also underrepresented as there is very little to extend our gifted and talented children in the area. I may possibly do this club as a lunchtime club rather than after school but I do need volunteer to help me with this so need to look at their availability. I want our girls to see coding is not gender specific and inspire for future careers. Children will code using Turtle Stitch and then using the sewing machine they will print their designs. Once confident we would be able to work on projects and specific designs to enhance Art and Design and Technology in the school.

Events will be launched during EU Code Week which is also the schools SMART week where we introduce children to activities above the normal curriculum.

I am hoping to then continue this as a 6 week programme and evaluate and improve gaining skills from other coding clubs like the Raspberry Pi Code Club and then repeat as needed with other groups of children
