Day of Coding and Learning with Micro:bits and LEGO

Steam academy C.I.C

Description Our Day of Coding and Learning with Micro:bits and LEGO will introduce children aged 8–14 to the fundamentals of coding and robotics through fun, hands-on learning. Using BBC Micro:bits and LEGO robotics kits, participants will explore block-based programming with the Microsoft MakeCode editor and see how their code comes to life by powering LEGO models.

The event will begin with a guided introduction to coding, followed by small-group challenges where children design and build LEGO cars, robots, and interactive creations. Each team will program their Micro:bit to control movement, lights, and sensors, then present their project at the end of the day. Resources will include laptops, Micro:bits, LEGO kits, printed worksheets, and volunteer mentors to provide step-by-step support.

Goals of the event:

Teach coding fundamentals through a playful, project-based approach.
Boost teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity by linking digital coding with physical LEGO builds.
Inspire children to see themselves as creators of technology, not just consumers.

Encourage underrepresented groups, especially girls and disadvantaged children, to explore STEM learning.

Target group:

Children aged 8–14 from the local community, particularly those who do not normally have access to coding clubs, robotics kits, or extracurricular digital activities.

What makes this event special:

The combination of coding with Micro:bits and LEGO makes technology learning tangible, fun, and accessible. Children see immediate results from their programming, making it more engaging than screen-only activities. The event also provides a safe, supportive environment where beginners feel confident to try, fail, and improve.

Other relevant information:

Participation is free but requires prior registration (places limited to ~20).

All materials are provided.

The Micro:bit and LEGO kits will remain with the organisation to support follow-up workshops, creating ongoing opportunities.
