Donhead Preparatory School and Liberty Primary School will work together to deliver a collaborative Meet and Code event focused on 3D design, computational thinking and digital creativity using a new 3D printer. The project will introduce primary-aged pupils to the world of 3D modelling and digital fabrication through hands-on, project-based learning experiences.
The event will use the free Oak National Academy KS2 Computing unit on 3D Modelling as the foundation for teaching. Pupils will learn how to create, manipulate and refine 3D digital objects using age-appropriate CAD software before preparing and printing their final designs using the 3D printer. Through these activities, children will develop computational thinking, creativity, problem-solving, design thinking and resilience.
The event will combine direct teaching, collaborative practical activities, peer discussion and iterative design. Pupils will explore how digital designs are transformed into real-world physical objects and will gain experience of the full design process from idea generation to prototype creation. The 3D printer will make learning tangible and engaging by allowing pupils to physically produce the objects they create on screen.
The goals of the event are to increase access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities, develop pupils’ confidence and creativity in computing and engineering, introduce children to emerging technologies and future careers, encourage collaboration between pupils from different school communities and inspire greater participation in technology and digital making.
The target group is primary-aged pupils from Donhead Preparatory School and Liberty Primary School. Liberty Primary School serves a diverse community, with 36.7% of pupils eligible for pupil premium funding, making access to enrichment opportunities particularly valuable. Bringing pupils together from both schools will promote inclusion, collaboration and shared learning experiences.
What makes this event special is its strong focus on hands-on making and real-world application. Many children will be experiencing 3D printing technology for the first time. Rather than simply learning about technology, pupils will actively design, test and create products themselves. The project supports equitable access to innovative STEM experiences by enabling children from different backgrounds to learn together using industry-relevant technology.
