AI Programming Club

St Minver School Parent & Teacher Association

Description We are applying for funding to introduce a technology project using ELECFREAKS kits—including the Wonder Building Kit, MakeCode Arcade, and TPBot Car Kit—to engage SEN and disadvantaged KS2 pupils with coding and digital technology through a hands-on, practical approach.

Building on previous successful initiatives, this project will provide pupils with access to engaging, real-world technology. The kits will enable children to move beyond passive use of devices and become active creators, building, programming, and interacting with physical computing systems while developing key digital skills as well as a useful introduction to implementing AI.

The project will focus on coding, digital literacy, problem-solving, and computational thinking. Pupils will use MakeCode to create simple games, control robots, and design interactive models. This will support learning in areas such as sequencing, debugging, and mathematical concepts including pattern recognition, coordinates, AI and logical reasoning.

Younger pupils will begin with simple block-based coding and guided activities, such as basic movements and simple games. Older pupils will progress to more complex tasks, including programming TPBot cars and creating interactive builds with the Wonder Kit. Pupils will work collaboratively, with older children supporting younger peers, encouraging teamwork, confidence, and communication.

Teaching methods will include hands-on building, guided coding tasks, collaborative problem-solving, and teacher-led support. The ELECFREAKS kits will be central resources, supported by school devices and access to MakeCode.

The primary aim is to support SEN and disadvantaged pupils in building confidence with technology, particularly those who struggle with traditional screen-based learning. The interactive and tactile nature of the kits provides an accessible and engaging introduction to coding.

While targeted, the project will benefit all KS2 pupils. Its strength lies in its practical approach, allowing pupils to see immediate results from their work, building motivation and a sense of achievement.

The equipment will be used in future years, ensuring sustainability and wider impact across computing and STEM.
