Computing for Girls

Friends of Downview

Description This event is a hands-on computing club teaching programming, physical computing, and introductory AI. We will use BBC micro:bits and Kitronik :MOVE mini MK2 buggies to write and debug code, control movement, complete challenges (e.g. drawing shapes), and explore machine learning by programming devices to recognise movements. Learning is delivered through practical, project-based activities, demonstrations, and collaborative tasks using specialist equipment.
Girls remain underrepresented in computing, both in education and industry. The aim is to increase girls’ confidence and interest in computing, address gender imbalance, develop problem-solving and coding skills, and encourage continued study beyond primary education. Alongside targeting girls, the focus will be to also include pupil premium students, who may lack access to enrichment opportunities.
The event is tailored to this group by providing a supportive, inclusive environment, hands-on creative learning, and exposure to exciting areas like robotics and AI, building confidence through visible achievements.
The club will run for at least six weeks. Places will be allocated via sign-up, prioritising girls and Pupil Premium students. All equipment will be provided to ensure equal access.
