Coding for Climate Action

Yuvanis Foundation

Description These hands-on coding workshop introduce secondary school students aged 11–16 to physical computing and environmental data through the BBC micro:bit, a pocket-sized programmable device designed for young learners.

Using the MakeCode block-based editor, participants will explore how technology can be used to monitor and respond to climate-related challenges, such as measuring temperature, detecting light levels, and building simple environmental sensors.

The sessions will follow the Neon Futures "Coding for Climate Action" curriculum, guiding young people from their first lines of code through to creating a working micro:bit project with real-world climate relevance.

Participants will learn to collect and display environmental data, draw connections between digital tools and sustainability, and understand how coding skills apply to pressing global issues. Alongside technical skills, the workshop encourages critical thinking about climate change and the role young people can play in responding to it.

Yuvanis Foundation will host the event at our community base in Oldham, welcoming 20–30 young people from some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the region, including Werneth, Coldhurst, and Westwood. Many of our participants are from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds and face significant barriers to engaging with technology, STEM education, and digital skills development. For these young people, access to hands-on coding experiences is limited both in school and at home.

What will make these events special is that it will take place in a trusted, familiar community setting rather than a school or formal institution.

Yuvanis has 15 years of experience engaging underserved communities, and our approach prioritises accessibility, cultural relevance, and inclusion. No prior coding experience is required. All equipment and resources will be provided free of charge.

Registration details will be confirmed and shared through Yuvanis's community networks, local schools, and partner organisations including Action Together Oldham.
