Autonomous Robot Rescue Challenge

FRIENDS OF MUSCLIFF PRIMARY SCHOOL

Description This event will introduce Key Stage 2 children to autonomous robotics using Crumble Controllers and robotics sensors. It will show children how robots can use sensors to respond to their surroundings rather than simply following a fixed set of movement instructions.

Children will begin by discussing real-world examples of autonomous technology, such as delivery robots, rescue robots, warehouse robots and self-driving vehicles. They will then explore how sensors help robots collect information from the environment. Using Crumble equipment, children will investigate how a distance sensor can detect obstacles and how line-following components can help a robot stay on a route.

The main activity will be a Robot Rescue Challenge. Teams will be given a fictional scenario where their robot must travel through a route, avoid hazards and reach a rescue point. They will design an algorithm, programme their robot, test it on the challenge course and debug their solution when it does not work as expected.

The event will finish with a showcase where teams demonstrate their robot and explain how their code uses sensors to make decisions. Children will also take part in a short age-appropriate discussion about responsible technology, including why automated systems need careful testing and why humans are still responsible for the technology they create.

This event will be free for children and will help make advanced digital skills, robotics and engineering more accessible within the primary school community.

By the end of the event, children will be able to:

explain how sensors allow robots to respond to their environment
use selection in a program, such as “if the robot detects an obstacle, then stop or turn”
use testing and debugging to improve an autonomous robot
work as a team to solve a robotics challenge
describe why robots and automated systems need to be designed and tested carefully
