Through my role as a DSH Lead teacher and I Belong advocate, I will promote and run a series of mini free KS2 Junior Esports events in at least 6 local schools that I have links with but I would like to reach more this year. Each event is 2.5 hours per class so if 12 classes this would equate to 30 hours of sessions initially running over 6 weeks post SATs (see dates below). In the school event, each class not only competes using Nintendo switches but would complete activities all based around the esports industry. Female role models to promote activities and challenges encourage girls participation and SEND pupils is vitally important. As part of this, the use of physical computing would enhance the experience (see I Belong strategies) , so I would like to purchase Crumble buggy kits, sensors and matrix linked to Mario Cart (the game they will play). They are going to design and program their own Mario Cart which links well with the gaming as they have to decide on their racing car for each race. Throughout the session, there are opportunities for team to gain points for their team through teamwork and making great team logos or chants. This competitive element allows all teams of ranging abilities, ethnicity and gender to join in and add their own twist. It also encourages the teamwork making it more than just about winning races - teachers control this element!
Each class winning team, would then be invited to an all day Junior Esports Regional tournament at Edge Hill where there will be additional workshops about gaming and computing (5 hour event reaching 48+ children). The grant to purchase Crumble kits for the winning teams as a follow on from the activities completed and trophies. There would be a Game Design Winner, Tournament Winner, Fair Play Award. Each child who participates would also receive a goody bag.
I will produce a flyer invite all of the schools I work with and promote this through my social media network with girls and SEND being a main target.
