Description This is fun series of interactive lunchtime workshops designed to inspire and inform 8-9 year olds about AI. IT is particularly focused on building digital confidence and literacy in children from underprivileged backgrounds who do not always have the same access to technology so that they can participate more fully in a rapidly changing digital society. The event itself will have an informal feel - snacks and refreshments will be available so children do not feel they are at school attending lessons. The first session will introduce exactly what AI is to clear up any misconceptions about it being some kind of super power that will take over the world. Children will be given the opportunity through guided discussions to understand aspects of life and work where ai can be useful and where humans are much more effective. The second session will provide children with hands on activities pattern spotting to help them better understand what ai actually does. Guided discussion will encourage children to reflect on the human qualities that ai can not replace. The third session will encourage critical thinking skills - children must be detectives to decide whether given material is ai generated or genuine. We will also learn ai can make mistakes. Guided discussion will lead children to think about how humans still need to learn and think for themselves. The 4th session will focus on the areas where ai can help us. Interactive activities will show ai can process large amounts of information quickly, can store and recall millions of facts, generate many different ideas very quickly and analyse data. Guided discussions will lead children to consider how humans are still needed to oversee, guide or fill in the gaps. The 5th and final session will provide the children with an opportunity to work collaboratively on a project - to design an information leaflet on AI. They will compare their outcomes to one that has been generated entirely by ai and will discuss the pros and cons of each method and consider how they could use ai in future projects alongside their own thinking.
