AI Explorers

Barley Hill Primary School

Description This course will give children opportunities to build AI literacy: understanding what AI tools can and can not do, how to use them thoughtfully and how to spot their limitations. The main message of this course is to remind children that AI is a tool and not an alternative to using their own brains and creativity. This course will empower all children , but particularly SEN children, who may trust and rely on technology unquestioningly. Early guided AI literacy is an essential protective factor, encouraging children to think and question AI before unsupervised use increases.
Through guided discussion, pre-prepared AI generated text and images as well as hands on activities children will cover the following in each session:

Session 1: What is AI and how does it learn?
Session 2 : Using AI as a creative collaborator without disengaging their own thinking.
Session 3: Identifying common AI errors and understanding why they occur.
Session 4: Using AI safely and appropriately.
Session 5: Comic strip activity. Children create a human superhero who uses AI assistant to solve a problem but has to spot and correct a mistake that AI makes before going on to save the day.
