Coding Club - STEM

LAIRA GREEN PTA

Description Proposal: After-School STEM Clubs for Disadvantaged Youth
Project Overview
This initiative delivers three intensive after-school coding clubs for disadvantaged children using Lego Education, Scratch, and BBC micro:bit. Each club provides ten 50-minute sessions (8.3 hours total) demonstrating real-world coding applications.
Demographic & Local Need
Located in Plymouth, our school’s catchment area ranks in the top 10% nationally for economic and social deprivation on the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). Over 50% of our pupils qualify for Free School Meals (FSM)—nearly double the English national average of 26.5%. Plymouth functions as a low-wage economy where weekly earnings average 14% below the national baseline, leaving our pupils highly vulnerable to being digitally left behind.
Project Impact & Delivery
These clubs bridge the opportunity gap by connecting digital literacy to future employment. We aim to inspire students toward stable, high-paying STEM careers by collaborating with local industry partners. The curriculum targets vital developmental milestones:
Lego Coding: Builds collaboration and physical problem-solving skills.
BBC micro:bit: Connects programming logic to hardware engineering and daily life.
Scratch: Instills computational thinking and systematic debugging resilience.
Funding Request
While the school owns the core software licenses, our current tablet fleet is aging out of service. Grant funding will be directed entirely toward purchasing a dedicated set of iPads. This hardware will directly sustain these clubs and guarantee our most vulnerable children equal access to modern technology.
