Content taught:
Algorithmic thinking - design and test system
Programming - create a menu based system that presents a series of options for calculating carbon capture
Ethical concerns - how can computer science be used to focus attention on and develop a solutions based approach to an ethical and social issue
Goals:
Students able to design alternative solutions and make informed choices on which possible solution to take forward
Use chosen design as basis for programmed solution. Apply mathematical approaches to collecting data and developing formulae for solution
Ensure that the system is user friendly
Be able to present solutions and discuss how computer science can be used to create solutions that are of benefit to humanity
Target Group:
Key Stage 4 students in Year 10 studying computer science at GCSE level
What makes your event special for the target group?
There are very few online calculators that are easily accessible for average users. The goal to design a user friendly system is key as it will encourage non-specialists to engage with the system. As a result, this will also provide an opportunity for users to develop an enhanced awareness of climate change issues
Other relevant information:
The event is tied closely to a wider whole school and charity focus on climate change and renewables. The programming event is linked to our Nature Reserve. With students programming a solution, this then ties into the tree planting plan we have for our Reserve.
This session will be sued for students to consolidate and showcase their solutions.
