Our planned Meet and Code event is a School Enrichment Coding Day, designed specifically for our Year 5 pupils at Warren Mead Junior School. The day will introduce children to the fundamentals of coding and computational thinking through a mixture of hands-on activities and interactive digital tools. The all-day session will blend unplugged coding games with screen-based programming challenges, making it highly accessible for children regardless of their prior experience with technology.
The aim is to build their understanding of sequencing, logic and problem-solving in a way that feels playful and engaging.
The primary goal is to inspire Year 5 children to see themselves as capable creators of technology, not just consumers of it. By working collaboratively in small groups, children will also develop teamwork and communication skills. This enrichment day is particularly impactful for children who may have limited access to digital learning at home, helping to bridge the digital divide.
Warren Mead Junior School has a school catchment area which includes the Tattenham and Preston ward, which has an Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) rating of 3, placing it within the top 30% of the most socially deprived areas in the UK. Many of our pupils’ face barriers to accessing enrichment activities outside of school, particularly in the areas of STEM and digital literacy. By bringing this opportunity directly to them during the school day, we aim to provide inclusive access to high-quality digital education that can spark lasting interest and confidence in technology.
This event is open to all Year 5 pupils and will take place during the school day with no additional registration required. It will be especially beneficial to children who are underrepresented in the tech sector, including girls and pupils with special educational needs, and aligns with our wider goal of promoting equality of opportunity through meaningful, inspiring experiences.
