After-School Robotics Club: Empowering Girls in Tech
Our proposed After-School Robotics Club is a comprehensive, six-month program designed to ignite a passion for technology and coding in young girls, directly addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEM. Weekly 45-minute sessions, will provide each participant with hands-on learning. Each cohort will serve a minimum of 20 children and youth (ages 8-18), with a current waiting list of 35 keen girls. Participation is free of charge.
Content & Goals
Led by two experienced teachers and supported by peer mentoring, the club offers a rich curriculum:
Hands-on Robotics: Girls will gain practical skills in simple robotics building, basic soldering, and handling micro-electronics.
Progressive Coding: They'll learn coding from intuitive Blocky code to text-based languages like Python and Java, becoming confident coders.
Our primary goals are to excite girls about the future of robotics and technology and to increase female representation in engineering, as currently less than 25% of robotics competition participants are female. We also aim to provide equitable access to high-quality STEM education, especially for the significant number of girls from diverse ethnic minority backgrounds on our waiting list.
Why Our Club is Special
This girls-only club creates a supportive environment for exploring STEM without gender pressure. Learning is hands-on and project-based, allowing girls to build and code their creations. Our successful pilot program (pictured) achieved second place in a recent competition, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach and the dedication of our students.
This grant funding is crucial to purchase essential tools and parts (robotics kits, microcontrollers, soldering equipment, etc.), enabling us to launch this vital club and empower the next generation of female innovators.
Thank you for your time and for considering this application.
