Girls that code. Following on from the success last year I hope to this year run Y7/8 workshops for 30 female students over a period of 6 weeks to get them engaging with electronics and coding. Last year I ran similar workshops that have been really productive in building the confidence of girls in the classroom. The take up of girls in computer science has started to grow but we have still only have 10% of the students that are female at GCSE. Next year this is predicted to grow to 30/40% following on from this years project where I delivered really engaging sessions purely for girls. Surveys from the event indicate students are far more confident in the subject. The sessions allowed the girls to gain confidence in the subject in a safe environment. This year I hope to have those that attended last year act as mentors in this years program so the girls have some strong females role models. I also hope this will start to break down the barriers for the subject take up. I want to offer it at the start of year this year 7 so that the students hit the ground running in the subject area.
Girls historically have enjoyed creative computing where they can actively problem solve. The event will therefore aim to get them building environmental monitoring systems with the aim to improve the school/community environment. The girls will prototype a system and them keep the finished project so they are encouraged to continue to tinker at home.
