Coding and collaborating with LEGO

Royal Grammar School

Beschreibung Introduction to block coding and physical computing. The children in the school rarely gain examples of physical computing and the community is in an isolated and deprived area of unemployment.

The school has identified the need for real-world connections to STEM through coding and is very keen to use LEGO, targeting their SEND students (there are two children in particular they are very keen to enable the physical use of LEGO and coding) . They intend to gain entry to the FIRST LEGO League to encourage the children to look beyond the horizons of the socially deprived local area.

The the initial workshops will involve hands-on building and coding with the LEGO kits, available through the charitable work of the RGS Newcastle Partnerships (provided free). This will enable every child in Year 5 and Year 6 to access the LEGO and have the opportunity to encounter coding.

The follow-up workshop will target the SEND, girls and identified children to form a FIRST LEGO League team, to enter the competition to gain the real-world experience and present to judges. For this they need a LEGO Spike Prime kit and additional sensors, for which the funding will enable them to continue their learning. Therefore, the funding will enable the LEGO kit to be introduced, providing teacher training, in addition to the children’s experience.

The goals are to:
- introduce physical computing with block coding to new children
- focus on SEND children
- provide teacher training for visiting teachers
- enable future use of the LEGO resources
- improve communication and teamwork between students of underrepresented backgrounds, especially ethnic minorities and girls.

The event will be facilitated by Dr. Steve Bunce (Partnerships for Robotics), employed by the charity (Royal Grammar School Newcastle) for children and students at St. Jospeh's Primary School (the hosts).
