Mbot Roadtrip

Everton in the Community

Beschreibung Our session introduces year 4 pupils to robotics and block-based coding using mBot robots. Children will take on the role of programmers giving instructions to their robot cars to safely navigate a model town. Challenges include driving along roads and turning at junctions, navigating a roundabout, parking in a bay and using sensors to stop if a “pedestrian” is detected.
We use hands-on interactive learning methods: pupils work in pairs with tablets and mBots learning by trial, error and problem solving. Teachers/facilitators guide them with short demonstrations and step-by-step challenges that vary in difficulty.

Goals of the Event

*Introduce pupils to STEM concepts in a fun and accessible way

*Develop computational thinking skills: sequencing, debugging and logical problem solving

*Show how robots use sensors to interact with the real world

*Build confidence in teamwork communication and creativity

Target Group

The event is aimed at primary school children aged 8–9 (Year 4). This age group is developing independence in problem solving and benefits from practical hands-on STEM experiences.

What Makes the Event Special

Pupils don’t just learn coding on a screen-they see their code come to life in the real world as robots drive around the town.
The real-life context (roads roundabouts parking pedestrians) makes coding meaningful and relatable.
Children work in pairs creating a lively supportive and collaborative atmosphere.
The session links technology with everyday life helping pupils imagine how coding and robotics are used in transport engineering and smart cities.

Additional information:

*No prior coding experience is required.

*All equipment and resources are provided

*The event was free to attend the school was selected by using local insight data and consultations with the Liverpool City Region, Sefton Council, and Merseyside Police, we identified schools in priority areas where young people are most at risk. The L4 ward in Liverpool faces extreme deprivation, crime, and poor health, with 33% of children in absolute low-income households (double the national average). Each class had 30 children participating in the session.
