We are applying for funding to continue and expand the Nature Detectives Club, a project designed to engage SEN and disadvantaged KS2 pupils with digital technology through a nature-based approach.
Last year, the project was highly successful. Using wildlife cameras and two nest box cameras installed around the school grounds, pupils developed key digital skills in a gentle, accessible way. The initiative continues to thrive, with current excitement focused on Blue Tits nesting on site, which has become a major talking point across the school community and highlights the project’s impact.
We now aim to expand the project by installing additional cameras. Several bird boxes without cameras are in use, and there is evidence of wildlife activity in a nearby field, making it a suitable location for further monitoring. Improved outdoor Wi-Fi is also needed to support the cameras and enable a live feed on the school website, allowing pupils to view footage from home.
The project develops digital literacy, observation, and data analysis skills. Pupils will record and analyse the types and frequency of birds visiting the grounds, including patterns such as time-of-day activity. This supports maths skills through tally charts, data handling, and graph creation, while building confidence in using technology.
Younger pupils will collect data using simple methods, which older pupils will analyse and present digitally. As a final outcome, pupils will collaborate to create a page for the school website to showcase their findings, developing basic web design skills. Teaching will involve hands-on use of cameras, teamwork, and guided analysis using school digital platforms.
The primary aim is to support SEN and disadvantaged pupils, particularly those with sensory needs or low engagement with screen-based learning. By linking technology with nature, the project provides an accessible and engaging introduction to digital skills, reducing barriers to learning.
Although targeted, the project benefits all KS2 pupils through cross-year collaboration. Its strength lies in its sensory-friendly, outdoor approach, where pupils feel comfortable and engaged.
The equipment will be used in future years, making the project sustainable. Given last year’s success, there is clear value in extending this provision.
