Our Meet and Code event will introduce 60 Year 4 children to the foundations of coding through hands on exploration with Bee Bots, a child friendly programmable robot. The content focuses sequencing, logical reasoning, debugging, directional language and problem solving. Children will learn how to plan and input simple algorithms using the Bee Bot’s buttons, gradually progressing from basic directional commands to multi step sequences and collaborative challenges.
The event will use a blend of practical activities, themed mats, story based missions, and small group problem solving tasks. Children will work in teams to design routes, test their code, identify errors and refine their solutions. The classroom pack includes additional resources such as challenge cards, obstacle materials and extension tasks will allow children of different abilities to engage at their own pace.
The primary goal is to build confidence and enthusiasm for coding by making it accessible, playful and meaningful. The event also supports wider curriculum aims, including communication and teamwork.
Our target group is Year 4 pupils, including those who may have limited access to digital learning tools outside school. The school includes a catchment area with an Index of Multiple Deprivation of 3, meaning it is within the top 30% of deprived wards in the UK. This means many of the children will come from underserved and underrepresented groups.
The Bee Bot format is particularly effective for this age group because it removes barriers such as typing, reading complexity or prior technical knowledge.
