Create: Coding Solutions for a Greener World

FRIENDS OF STANTON SCHOOL

Beschreibung This is the second of three progressive Meet and Code workshops for primary pupils, built around sustainability. Having explored ideas and recognised real world problems in the first session, pupils now move on to creating their own solutions.

Working in small teams, pupils design and build a sustainable solution in Minecraft, such as a renewable energy build, a waste-free community or a wildlife-friendly space. They use simple block coding and age-appropriate AI tools to bring their ideas to life, making things happen automatically and solving problems as they go. The focus is on creativity, experimentation and working together to improve a design.

The goals of this workshop are to deepen pupils' confidence with computing, strengthen teamwork and communication, and develop computational thinking, problem solving and responsible use of technology. Pupils see that computing is creative and meaningful, and that mistakes are a normal part of building something that works.

The day is organised so the whole of Key Stage 2 can take part. Up to 59 pupils attend across the day, with Years 3 and 4 in the morning and Years 5 and 6 in the afternoon. The session is fully inclusive and structured so every child can take part regardless of prior experience. This includes the 12 Key Stage 2 pupils with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), and pupils from low income households, with 15 eligible for pupil premium support and 8 receiving free school meals, who may not have access to this kind of creative technology at home.

The session is delivered by Collaborative Computing Education, run by Jake Miles, a primary teacher with over 13 years of classroom experience and an MSc in Education, Learning, Technology and Society.

This workshop supports the school's curriculum in computing, science, geography and personal development, and prepares pupils for the final session, where they will explain and share what they have created. It builds directly on the first workshop in the series. No prior pupil experience is needed beyond the school arranging the groups.
