(beSpoke) Kinetic Art

Working through the entire creative “imagine-design-make” process we will build a digital, interactive kinetic art installation which will also feature imaginative lighting, audio and video.
We’ll use Raspberry Pi Pico based Spoke boards as a foundation. These turn any conductive object (e.g. fruit, a potato, an old metal tea-pot, etc. ….) into a programable trigger to drive Midi musical instruments, play audio tracks, or run video clips.
For beginners and younger participants the focus will be on design and configuration of pre-configured code and HTML. More advanced and older participants will modify the board’s underlying Python to read sensors and drive external LEDs, servos and other actuators. As such Spoke boards are a fantastic platform to engage all ages and abilities in the process of digital creation.
In addition to the process of design, configuration/coding, testing etc. the project will provide an opportunity to dabble in digital audio and video production (from simple voice recording and trimming to stop-motion animation and video making).
Participants will have the opportunity to see their creations displayed in public and also see how this project feeds into a larger initiative for a Christmas installation at the end of the year.
We plan to run this as a five 90 minute sessions on Monday evenings plus additional “hands-on” sessions for extra building testing and installation, and a “bring your family and friends” session to allow a wider group to get involved.
