We are seeking funding to acquire a set of BBC micro:bit microcontrollers for our technology club. This program provides an immersive, hands-on environment for female and female-identifying students (ages 8-18) to explore the intersection of technology, coding, and environmental sustainability through the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This initiative focuses on technology and coding, runs for a total duration exceeding the 240-minute minimum, serves a minimum of 20 youth, and is offered free of charge.
Content and Goals: AI-Driven Eco-Projects
The core of this program is to move coding off the screen and into the physical environment, using hardware to solve real-world ecological challenges.
Students will learn using the micro:bit’s built-in light, temperature, and accelerometer sensors, to collect environmental data. They will then use basic Machine Learning (ML) models to train their micro:bits to recognize patterns—such as identifying optimal conditions for plant growth or detecting wildlife movement—creating "smart" automated systems.
Students will prototype a range of green projects, such as smart automated greenhouses that conserve water, energy-efficient smart lighting, or data-logging devices that track local biodiversity.
What makes this club unique is the direct application of computer science to climate action. By blending environmental awareness with cutting-edge AI training, we are engaging a demographic of girls who are passionate about the planet but are often underrepresented in the development of the technologies used to protect it.
