Our Meet and Code event, Girls Coding for Climate Action, will inspire girls aged 9–11 to discover how technology can be used to solve real-world environmental challenges. Using BBC Micro:bits and a range of sensors, participants will learn key computing concepts including selection, variables, inputs, outputs and data collection, while designing and building their own climate-focused technology solutions. The event is the beginning of a longer term project building on the work of Harvey Mudd College and The Computing Education Research Centre.
The event will introduce learners to environmental issues such as energy conservation, temperature monitoring, sustainable growing, flood awareness and reducing waste. Through creative, hands-on challenges, girls will use Micro:bits with sensors to collect environmental data, make decisions based on changing conditions, and create prototypes that respond to real-world problems.
Our approach is deliberately creative, collaborative and open-ended. Rather than following a single set of instructions, participants will be encouraged to explore, experiment and develop their own ideas. Visible Thinking routines will be embedded throughout the day to reduce barriers to participation and help learners articulate their reasoning, test assumptions and build confidence in problem-solving.
The event has a strong focus on inclusion, belonging and representation. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn about diverse female role models working in computing, engineering and environmental technology. The event will also celebrate participants’ own work through showcases, demonstrations and peer feedback, ensuring that girls receive visible recognition for their ideas and achievements.
Our goals are to:
Increase girls’ confidence in coding and computational thinking.
Develop understanding of key programming concepts through practical application.
Demonstrate how digital technologies can help address climate and sustainability challenges.
Create a welcoming environment where girls feel they belong and can succeed in computing.
The event is particularly valuable for girls who may have had limited opportunities to engage with coding beyond the classroom. By connecting computing with issues they care about and empowering them to create meaningful solutions, we aim to build long-term interest, confidence and aspiration in digital and technological fields.
