What content does the event teach? Which methods and resources are used to convey this content to the participants?
The event is for students studying towards the OCR Computer Science GCSE
In this event they will deepen their understanding (using first hand experience) of:
-Embedded systems
-Using RGB channels to display colours using the 8-bit neopixel arrays
-The arrays will use lists/array data structures
-Strings and co-ordinates using the OLED breadboard screens
What are the goals of the event?
I already developed some resources for using the raspberry pi pico microcontroller to teach about sequencing, using the pico with a breadboard, a simple traffic light and a breakout board with pushbuttons.
This has been successful so I would like to expand this with the idea of buying some micro servos, some 1x8-bit neopixel arrays and some small OLED screens which connect to the breadboards. I will be developing further resources for making an embedded system to emulate a car park barrier opening and closing, using the neopixels to indicate free/taken spaces, and the small screens to show information to the user.
Which target group are you addressing with your event?
I am mainly targeting Low income households/disadvantaged economic backgrounds and also Ethnic minorities
What makes your event special for the target group?
I have made the event special for the target groups because students will not have programmed a microcontroller before, so I am wanting to expand their horizons by showing them another aspect to STEM which may inspire them to take this on as a future career. This will also help their GCSE prospects as they will have first-hand experience of Embedded Systems which is part of the syllabus. Aspects of CPU performance, data representation and computational thinking will be incorporated into the scheme of the event.
-Many students at the school I work at are disadvantaged, as Based on the 'Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)', Ipswich is the relatively most deprived Authority in Suffolk.
We are lucky in that many Ethnic minorities are represented at our school, this is partly due to it being a Catholic Faith school. Ethnic minorities comprise only 25% of the UK tech workforce.
Is there any other relevant information for the target group, e.g. about registration?
-The students already attend my school
