Create a video game with AI!

SWANCOMM

Beschreibung This "Create a video game with AI!" course can teach invaluable skills to students and allow them to walk away with a finished, polished product, even if their technical computing skills have thus far been lacking. It is also a theme that many pupils are interested in, and I myself am an advocate for treating video games as an art form.

The course is designed in such a way that it can complement the teaching of the KS3 curriculum, while setting students up well for the incoming changes to the GCSE curriculum, which is predicted to focus more heavily on applications of AI.

Applications are open for all students aged 11-16. I can personally lead a course of 30 children, but there could be another staff member who is willing and able to lead a second classroom at the same time. I predict that the course will be very over-subscribed, and I intend to prioritise younger pupils (who have had less exposure to AI and computing), Pupil Premium students (who are from low-income households) and female students (encouraging girls in STEM).

Students to work in pairs and develop a single game within each pair. For the younger or les-experienced students, they will be able to progress through the course with "vibe-coding" and not needing to program at all. For more advanced pupils, I will encourage them to manually debug any of the code generated by AI.

The details for the course may be refined over the coming weeks, but this event is intended to spread across five 55-minute sessions (with scope for a sixth, if needed):
Lesson 1: A general introduction to the task and AI, and using AI for inspiration/planning.
Lesson 2: Using AI to generate artwork for the game, and getting a suitable file structure for the project.
Lesson 3: Get code working for the game using AI.
Lesson 4: Continue coding, as well as testing.
Lesson 5: Course feedback and evaluation (What bugs were there at the end? What did AI struggle with? What did you learn about AI?)

This should allow the students to learn about the variety of capabilities in modern AI and how to write strong prompts. It will also allow the inclusion of computing knowledge, such as best practices for a file structure and online safety.
