Pixels, Python and People

Royal Grammar School

Beschreibung Introduction to pixels and their place in everyday life. We will be coding on micro:bits, with python, to make amazing pixel animations.

The school has identified the need for real-world connections to STEM through coding and is very keen to use micro:bits, targeting their SEND and girl students.

The 4 hour workshop will involve hands-on building and coding with the micro:bit pixel kits (designed and developed at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle). The facilitator's time is made available through the charitable work of the RGS Newcastle Partnerships (provided free). This will enable children in Year 5 and Year 6 to access the micro:bits and kits and have the opportunity to encounter coding. The workshop will target the SEND and girl students.

The goals are to:
- introduce physical computing with micro:bit and pixels, demonstrating python coding to new children
- focus on SEND and girl students
- provide teacher training for visiting teachers
- enable future use of the micro:bit resources
- improve communication and teamwork between students of underrepresented backgrounds, especially girls.

The event will be facilitated by Matt Moore, employed by the charity (Royal Grammar School Newcastle) for children and students at St. Jospeh's Primary School (the hosts). The school will use the funding to purchase micro:bits.
