Robots, robots, robots! Getting started with robots!

Royal Grammar School

Beschreibung Introduction to text-based coding and physical computing. The students in the school and neighbouring schools often experience coding through the curriculum, but rarely get hands-on with physical computing.

The school has identified the need for real-world connections to STEM through coding and is very keen to use the FIRST TECH Challenge of a way to target their students, from a socially economic area of deprivation. They intend to gain entry to the FIRST TECH Challenge to encourage the students to look beyond the horizons of their local area.

The workshops will involve an introduction to text-based coding, led by sixth form students from RGS Newcastle. One of the students is an ex-student of the school and keen to develop the passion for coding in their own area. The workshops will also include hands-on building with the FIRST TECH kits. This will enable the Year 7 - 9 students to access robot design and have the opportunity to encounter coding.

The workshop will target the SEND, girls and identified children to form a FIRST TECH Challenge team, to enter the competition to gain the real-world experience and present to professionals. For this they need a robot kit and additional sensors, for which the funding will enable them to continue their learning. Therefore, the funding will enable the robot kit to be introduced, providing teacher training for the Computing teachers, in addition to the students' experience.

The goals are to:
- introduce physical computing with text-based coding to new students
- provide teacher training for visiting teachers
- enable future use of the robotics resources
- improve communication and teamwork between students of underrepresented backgrounds, especially ethnic minorities and girls.

The event will be led by Sixth form students and facilitated by Dr. Steve Bunce (Partnerships for Robotics), employed by the charity (Royal Grammar School Newcastle) for students at Bede Secondary School (the hosts).
