Gold Programme 25-26

Harrow Way Community School

Beschreibung In October we will deliver to 80 11-14 year who are high ability Computer Scientists the following over 4-5 sessions after school:

Our Gold Programme is our commitment to closing the digital skills gap, mirroring the goals of global initiatives like Amazon Future Engineer. We will demonstrate the crucial, natural progression from visual, block-based programming to powerful, text-based coding.

Part 1: Visual Foundations with Scratch
This session is aimed at our Year 7 cohort dedicated to computational thinking and problem-solving—core skills essential for any future engineer. We begin where all great coders start: building confidence and creativity using blocks.

> Interactive Story & Game Logic
Participants will see how to build a short, interactive Halloween-themed game, focusing on Sequencing and Conditional Logic (if/then statements).
> Animation and Debugging
We’ll intentionally introduce an error (bug) and demonstrate the process of Debugging, turning frustration into a core coding skill.
> Persistence & > Problem Solving- Scratch as a Stepping Stone
We'll showcase how simple block commands, like loops and variables, are the exact same concepts used in professional text languages.
> Use of GoPiGo Robots x 5 to convert Scratch into working programs for these robots

Part 2: The Power of Python (Your Future Career Path)
This is the bridge to advanced, career-ready coding. Python is the language of Data Science, AI, and Web Development—key areas championed by programs like Amazon Future Engineer. We'll demystify the syntax and show its real-world application.

>Text-Based Problem Solving
We'll build a basic, but powerful Python application (e.g., a simple command-line quiz or a text encryptor) to demonstrate Variables, Functions, and Syntax. Algorithm Design

> From Blocks to Text:
The Translation- A direct side-by-side comparison showing a complex Scratch loop being effortlessly translated into a Python for or while loop. Transition to Professional Code

> Real-World Library Demo
We'll briefly introduce a Python library (like the kind used in tech companies) to show how Python handles things like data, graphics, or even simple AI
