Donhead EcoCode Microbit event

Friends of Donhead

Opis Donhead Preparatory School and Liberty Primary School are planning to collaborate on an inclusive and creative coding event using the [EcoCode programme](https://www.digitall.charity/ecocode?utm_source=chatgpt.com) to help children explore sustainability, environmental responsibility and computational thinking through physical computing. The event will bring together pupils from both schools, including children from Liberty Primary School, where 36.7% of pupils are eligible for pupil premium, helping widen access to high-quality STEM and digital learning opportunities.

Using the downloadable EcoCode resources alongside BBC micro:bits, pupils will take part in hands-on workshops focused on coding, environmental data collection and problem-solving. Children will learn how technology can be used to address real-world environmental challenges by creating and programming projects linked to sustainability themes such as energy use, recycling, biodiversity and climate awareness. Activities may include using micro:bits to collect and display environmental data, designing simple monitoring systems and creating interactive sustainability-themed prototypes.

The goals of the event are to develop pupils’ confidence in coding, computational thinking, creativity, teamwork and engineering design while also helping them understand how technology can be used positively to improve the world around them. The event will particularly focus on making computing and STEM accessible, engaging and meaningful for all learners, including those who may not traditionally see themselves represented in technology-related fields.

The workshops will use a “low floor, high ceiling” approach so that all children can participate successfully while also allowing opportunities for deeper exploration and challenge. Pupils will work collaboratively in mixed-school groups, encouraging communication, inclusion and shared problem-solving between children from different educational settings and backgrounds.

This event is aimed at primary-aged pupils and is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and future-focused thinking through practical, hands-on experiences that combine sustainability education with coding and physical computing.
